Maize farmers and traders in Uganda and Tanzania will for now have to find alternative markets for the maize grain after Kenya issued an immediate ban on maize imports from both countries citing concerns over aflatoxins.
A letter signed by the Kenyan Acting Director General for Agriculture and Food Authority stated that Kenya has been surveilling food imports to Kenya and discovered that maize from Uganda and Tanzania contains high levels of aflatoxins.
The sudden ban has led to a snarl of traffic at the Busia border between Uganda and Kenya as trucks carrying maize to Kenya have been blocked from crossing the border.
