The First Reading (1 Samuel 3:1-10, 19-20): The Lord calls the young Samuel three times while he is sleeping in the temple. Guided by Eli, Samuel finally responds, "Speak, for your servant is listening", and grows to become an accredited prophet of the Lord.

The Responsorial Psalm (Ps 40): A prayer of obedience and surrender: "Behold I come".
