In today's moving Homily, Father Eric Caden explores the extraordinary faith of Hannah, a woman who "poured her heart out to the Lord" with total intimacy and trust. He reminds us that, just like Hannah, we do not need to wear a mask or conceal our authentic needs from God. Father Caden reflects on the image of Jesus on the Cross, which proclaims that He is "unintimidated by your humanity"—He is not scared by our weakness, shame, or sin. We are invited to approach the Lord with the same abandon and confidence, knowing He welcomes us as His beloved.
The Scriptures reveal the power of persistent prayer and divine authority:
The First Reading from 1 Samuel 1:9-20 tells the story of Hannah, who in her bitterness and deep sorrow, prayed silently for a child. The Lord remembered her, and she bore a son, Samuel, recognizing that she had asked the Lord for him.
The Responsorial Psalm from 1 Samuel 2 exclaims: "My heart exults in the Lord, my Savior".
The Holy Gospel according to Mark (1:21-28) shows Jesus entering the synagogue in Capernaum, where the people were "astonished at his teaching" because He taught with authority. Jesus demonstrates this power by commanding an unclean spirit to come out of a man, leaving the crowds amazed at this "new teaching with authority".
On this day, we also honor Saint Hilary, a Bishop who taught the divinity of Christ with constancy. Let us strive to profess what he believed and practice what he taught.
