In April 1964 ARVN II Corps planned a return to the Khe Nuoc Lah valley. A previous assault into the VC sanctuary had cost the ARVN a battalion, but a new corps commander had a plan prepared that he hoped would overwhelm the VC. Operation Quyet Thang 202 was a multi battalion heliborne assault with the Americans providing helicopter transport. The operation began in late April and when it was complete a month later the VC sanctuary was smashed, but at a high cost in damage and losses to helicopters and close air support aircraft.
