The Murshidabad University Act was enacted in 2018. According to this Act, Murshidabad University was formed by upgrading Krishnanath College. Since then, there has been repeated discussion about restoring the name of Krishnanath.

In February 2025, Krishnanath College was dissolved. All teaching and non-teaching staff of the college were absorbed into Murshidabad University. This raised a crucial question — would the name of Raja Krishnanath, whose donation and efforts led to the establishment of the college, vanish altogether?

Finally, that long-standing wound has been addressed. The alumni claim that the inclusion of Krishnanath’s name is the result of their continuous movement and protests.

On Saturday, a bill to add Krishnanath’s name to Murshidabad University was passed in the State Assembly.

However, questions remain as to whether this change will improve the academic condition of the university.

Despite this, the alumni remain optimistic about the future of the university.
