Is Berhampore set to become a ‘Smart City’ in the state? Berhampore has been included in the list as the state government has selected 25 cities under a new development plan. In the state budget presented on February 5, the modernization of several cities was announced. The budget mentioned that these cities would be equipped with modern facilities and improved infrastructure. Among the 25 selected cities, only one city from Murshidabad district has been included — Berhampore.
After the budget announcement, the Chief Minister stated at a press conference, “We will carry out the work without harming anyone or affecting anyone’s livelihood. First, we will conduct a survey, and then the work will begin.”
The Chairman of Berhampore Municipality is quite optimistic about the Smart City initiative. What benefits will residents receive if Berhampore becomes a Smart City? How much will the quality of life improve?
Berhampore is home to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital and the historic Barrack Square ground. As a city rich in history and culture, it remains to be seen how much further development will take place if it is transformed into a Smart City.
