Stories of Migration: Noah Morris
Noah came to Britain from Jamaica as a child, as part of the Windrush community. His early memories are shaped by the warmth of family, the sounds of music and the journey across the ocean to a new life. For Noah, arriving in Essex meant stepping into a place that felt unfamiliar at first, but slowly became home.
He reflects on what it meant to grow up between cultures, holding on to the traditions of his Jamaican heritage while building a life in Britain. His story speaks to belonging, identity and the strength of community. It also reminds us of the challenges faced by the Windrush generation, who contributed so much to the country while often facing barriers and prejudice.
Today, Noah continues to share his experiences, honouring the legacy of the Windrush generation and celebrating the roots that shaped him. His journey is one of resilience, pride and the ongoing search for place and identity.
Peoples of Essex Exhibition and Documentary Series
Peoples of Essex is an exhibition and documentary project exploring the history of migration and settlement in Essex. From early humans arriving after the Ice Age, to the Romans, the Dutch and Flemish Weavers, Kindertransport children during the Second World War, the Windrush generation arriving in 1948 at Tilbury, and modern communities who continue to make Essex their home today.
Across three years we worked with historians, archaeologists, museum specialists, community groups, schools and young people. We recorded interviews, filmed documentaries and created interactive displays that show how different cultures, skills and identities have shaped Essex over thousands of years.
The exhibition features animated timelines, short films, holographic artefact displays, immersive sound environments, practical craft workshops and digital learning tools. It also includes modern migration stories from people who have arrived in Essex from Sudan, Jordan, Ukraine, Iraq and other areas affected by conflict and displacement.
The exhibition takes place at Jaywick Martello Tower in October 2025 and at Colchester Libraries in December 2025. It has been created in partnership with Signals and supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Essex Community Foundation.
