Peoples of Essex: Dutch Weavers
In the late 1500s and early 1600s, many Dutch and Flemish families travelled to England seeking safety. They were fleeing religious persecution and conflict in parts of what is now Belgium and the Netherlands. Queen Elizabeth I invited these skilled textile workers to settle in towns across the east of England, including Colchester, Braintree and Halstead.
These newcomers brought with them advanced weaving techniques and new styles of cloth. Their work helped transform the local textile industry and supported the growth of Essex as a centre for high quality fabric production. The cloth they produced became known across Europe and helped shape the economy of the region.
At first, the Dutch and Flemish communities were seen as outsiders. They spoke different languages, ate different food and followed different traditions. Yet over time, they built relationships with local people, shared skills and became part of the fabric of everyday life.
Their influence can still be traced in place names, architectural styles, weaving traditions and family histories throughout Essex. The story of the Dutch Weavers shows how cultural exchange and craftsmanship continue to shape the identity of a place long after the first arrival.
Peoples of Essex Exhibition and Documentary Series
Peoples of Essex is an exhibition and documentary project exploring the history of migration and settlement in Essex. From early humans arriving after the Ice Age, to the Romans, the Dutch and Flemish Weavers, Kindertransport children during the Second World War, the Windrush generation arriving in 1948 at Tilbury, and modern communities who continue to make Essex their home today.
Across three years we worked with historians, archaeologists, museum specialists, community groups, schools and young people. We recorded interviews, filmed documentaries and created interactive displays that show how different cultures, skills and identities have shaped Essex over thousands of years.
The exhibition features animated timelines, short films, holographic artefact displays, immersive sound environments, practical craft workshops and digital learning tools. It also includes modern migration stories from people who have arrived in Essex from Sudan, Jordan, Ukraine, Iraq and other areas affected by conflict and displacement.
The exhibition takes place at Jaywick Martello Tower in October 2025 and at Colchester Libraries in December 2025. It has been created in partnership with Signals and supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Essex Community Foundation.
