It may seem like a isolated community deep in the Cascades foothill, but it is not that far from the rest of the greater Puget Sound area. Only about 45 minutes away from Everett, the town of Index is a very small and peaceful town that is not that far from US Highway 2. There is a grade crossing that I always like to shoot photos and videos there and that is the Index Ave grade crossing. One thing I like about the trains going through there is that you can hear the rumble of the locomotives as their engines scream in full throttle, the distant train horn from another grade crossing west of the town, and the screaming of rail cars going downhill from the distance.
Plus, when you enter into town and go over the North Fork Skykomish River, you can also view the trains going over the river as well. The town of Index is a very small town with the near railroad traffic of downtown Seattle.
