In the Genpei War that engulfed Japan during the 1180s, the Minamoto clan chased the Heike/Taira clan into the country's most remote regions. In Shikoku's Iya Valley, the Heike built vine bridges across the river so they could cut the connection if attacked. You can cross one of these bridges (among others in different locations) at Kazurabashi. But fear not, as the locals replace the vines every few years. A short walk from the bridge, you'll find the lovely Biwa Waterfall as well.
Japan has had its unique kei cars since 1949. Regulations permit a maximum length of 11' 2", a width under 5', and a height under 6' 7" with engine displacement no larger than 660 cc. On Shikoku, I ended up renting this diminutive Suzuki Wagon R. It had a 658 cc three-cylinder with a CVT that caused it to rev over 4k at normal (as in slow in Japan) highway speeds. It did thankfully have adaptive cruise and functional Apple CarPlay.
A few months ago, I never knew I'd ever drive a Suzuki (let alone one with a split bench seat) and now I've driven two after that one in Bulgaria.
