Moderated by violinist and composer Jannina Norpoth, the conversation brings together composer and violinist Curtis Stewart, guitarist and composer A. Spencer Barefield, and composer and scholar George E. Lewis.

Presented in honor of the 46th anniversary of Detroit’s Creative Arts Collective, the panel reflects on the work of experimental Black artists and composers whose trailblazing ideas reshaped jazz, classical music, and beyond. The discussion traces artistic lineages, shared influences, and the role of Detroit as a vital center for creative experimentation.

Together, the panelists examine how the Black avant-garde continues to inform new generations of artists and how its history remains deeply connected to place, community, and creative freedom.
