MTA NYC Transit & MTA Bus Co: The 2006-2007 Orion VII 2nd Generation+ Hybrid Units (2017-2024)

A Quick refresh: The 2006-2007 Orion VII 2nd Generation+ Hybrid Units were numbered #3500-3783 for MTA Bus, and the NYCTA Units are numbered #6690-6905. The units are equipped with a Cummins EPA 07 ISB Engine with a BAE Systems HybriDrive Propulsion System. These were the first new buses purchased for the MTA Bus Company after the MTA took over the private lines under the Department of Transportation during the mid 2000's.

In 2013, MTA Bus unit 3563 was converted into a diesel unit. The bus is equipped with a Cummins EPA 07 ISL Engine with a Allison World B400R WTEC III transmission. This was done when a diesel conversion of the MTA Bus hybrid units was being tested in order to extend the use of the hybrid units, however the plan was scrapped. The bus was retired from passenger service in 2020 at the Spring Creek depot.

As the new decade rolled in, the hybrid units were being phased out. On the NYC Transit side, by December 2020, the Orions in Brooklyn were retired with the last active unit being Orion 6804 of the East New York depot. The units in Manhattan were fully retired by February 2022, with units 6776 and 6786 of the Mother Clara Hale depot being the last ones active in Manhattan. In July 2022, the NYCT units in Queens were retired with unit 6854 of the Queens Village depot holding the distinction of being the last active NYC Transit unit to retire.

On the MTA Bus side, all the Orions were fully retired by March 2024. Baisley Park depot stopped using the Old gen Orions by October 2023, with the remaining units transferring to the JFK Depot. The LaGuardia Depot's last two units, 3594 & 3736, were retired in late January 2024. Finally, the last unit to run was JFK Depot unit 3762 on March 24th, 2024. All the Old Gen Orions were replaced by Orion VII NG units passed down by NYC Transit and brand new Nova Bus LFS and New Flyer XD40 units.

The video covers the buses running on Manhattanville, Michael J. Quill, Tuskegee Airmen, Mother Clara Hale, East New York, Grand Avenue, Baisley Park, LaGuardia, JFK, Far Rockaway, and Queens Village routes.
