🔍 Episode Overview:
At about 1:45 AM on May 13, 2023, Officers Randy Romero and Thomas Horton saw a 2014 Mercedes with its engine running, blocking a driveway on Scotland Road near Montrose Avenue. As Officer Horton approached the car, he found the driver, 28-year-old Star Mathis, asleep. He asked her to put the car in park and turn off the engine. Noticing signs that suggested she might be impaired, the officers requested Star to get out of the vehicle. Officer Dylan O’Connor arrived soon after to help.

Officer O’Connor suspected that Star might be impaired and offered her the chance to complete field sobriety tests. The first test was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, followed by the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Star did not walk heel-to-toe or turn as she was supposed to. The last test was the One Leg Stand, and Star struggled to raise her foot correctly.

Officer O'Connor arrested Star for driving under the influence after she struggled to complete the field sobriety tests. Following her arrest, her vehicle was searched and towed for a required 12-hour period under John’s Law. Officer O’Connor then took Star to the South Orange Police Headquarters. At the station, he informed her of her Miranda rights and the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators. Star chose not to answer any questions and declined to provide breath samples.

After Star was processed, she was released to a friend who signed the Potential Liability Warning form for her. Officer O’Connor issued her several summonses, including operating under the influence, refusing a chemical test, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving without insurance, and driving without a license.
