The Great Stupa of Universal Compassion is a remarkable Buddhist monument located thirteen kilometers from Bendigo.
Modeled after the Six-Hundred-year-old, Great Stupa of Gyantse, in Tibet and standing nearly 50 meters high and 50 meters wide, making it, the largest stupa, in the Western world.
The entire project is designed to last 1,000 years, with ongoing maintenance, and planned improvements.
Construction officially began in 2003! 17 years later, the addition of a decorative four-meter finial, on top, marked a significant milestone, and the stupa was unveiled to the public.
It serves as a place of interfaith understanding, peace, and harmony, with the entire project being designed to last 1,000 years, with ongoing maintenance, and planned improvements
Construction is estimated to cost around $20 million – not including the cost of artwork. These funds are being raised through donations on an international basis. The Victorian Government has also contributed $2.5 million in regional development funds. Construction is taking place on a progressive basis as funds become available.
Inside the Great Stupa, is the world’s largest gem-quality jade Buddha statue, the Jade Buddha for Universal Peace, standing at 2.5 meters tall. The interior also includes a central temple (Gompa) used for rituals, meditation, and teachings, along with teaching rooms, a library, and 80 ornate shrine rooms. Additionally, there’s an exhibition centre showcasing a vast collection of Asian sacred relics and statues.

The 14th, Dalai Lama, visited the Great Stupa on June 7, 2007, and blessed the Buddhist monument.
His visit, was a significant event, attracting around 2,000 people, who came to witness the blessing. He was welcomed by the traditional owners of the land, the Jarra Jarra people, and participated in an Aboriginal smoking ceremony before entering the stupa.
