Week Two: An Ecological Dynamic Approach to Player Development, A Season of Proof & Evidence
Offensive Spacing & Ball Movement: What drives offensive efficiency? A major area we are focusing on during preseason is reducing the amount of re-penetration we have after the initial drive and kick, which often sees our players re-penetrate straight back into the collapsed or help defense.
We know that spacing and ball movement, in addition to paint touches drive offensive efficiency in a positive direction, so how do we help promote that with a youth team who has limited understanding of spacing or dominoes? We use a small sided game with constraints.
4v3 Spurs Drill + Bursts: Drive, Kick, Extra Pass
The 4v3 Spurs Drill, is one of our foundational small sided games that begins with an offensive advantage (4 on 3). It promotes quick, team-first decision-making against a scrambling defense to develop our crucial Drive, Kick, Extra Pass concept. This is powered by a number of constraints we use (1) No re-penetration (2) You have as many passes as there are defenders (3) Random shot clock (4) Scoring system, we double the points if it comes from an extra pass.
Key Benefits
🏀 Promotes "Drive, Kick, Extra Pass": Teaches players to immediately attack the paint, then find open teammates, embodying the "Dominoes Principle of Play" and limiting re-penetration back into the help defense.
🏀 Encourages "Trading Good for Great": Develops the habit of making the extra pass to turn a semi contested shot (good) into an open shot (great), enhancing the team's shooting concept.
🏀 Enhances Decision-Making: Forces rapid reading of the defense and execution of concepts under pressure, leading to more cohesive and unselfish offense.
The "Bursts" Progression (3v3)
🏀 The "Bursts" element transitions the drill from the 4v3 advantage to a continuous 3X3 small-sided game.
🏀 Scoring Mechanic: When a team scores in the 4v3, the player who scored immediately exits the scrimmage.
🏀 Dynamic Transition: The game instantly continues as 3X3. This forces the remaining players to quickly recognize the change in numbers and maintain intensity, rewarding the unselfish play needed to continue generating advantages.
