Dixon Hits No.28 side A
🎵 Reginald Dixon at the 3/8 Wurlitzer Theatre Organ with Piano, Granada Cinema, Clapham, London
Organ & Venue Context
This recording captures Reginald Dixon performing on a magnificent 3-manual, 8-rank Wurlitzer theatre organ (Opus 2141), installed in the Granada Cinema, Clapham in 1936. This particular instrument was a unique "special" model for the Granada chain, notable for its real piano attached to and playable from the organ console. Dixon's performance here masterfully blends the rich tones of the Wurlitzer with the rhythmic accent of the piano, showcasing his versatility away from his famed post at the Blackpool Tower.
Track Details
This lyrical medley of tunes was recorded during a session on March 29, 1939, featuring three popular songs from the era. The pieces were selected to highlight both dance hall energy and cinematic romance.
"Nice People"
Historical Background: A light and cheerful foxtrot composed by Peter Mendoza. This novelty tune was a popular dance hall number of the late 1930s, known for its fun and rhythmic melody.
"My Own"
Historical Background: A classic romantic ballad composed by Jimmy McHugh with lyrics by Harold Adamson. The song was featured in the 1939 film That Certain Age starring Deanna Durbin and Melvyn Douglas, and it quickly became a beloved standard.
"Tears on My Pillow"
Historical Background: This is an earlier, distinct song from the famous 1958 doo-wop hit. Composed by Len Young, this piece is a sentimental parlor song typical of the late 1930s, often performed as a slow foxtrot.
