Recorded during the later part of Dixon’s pre-war career, this 1940 release shows his effortless ability to blend smooth ballad playing with his trademark rhythmic style. The 3/13 Wurlitzer, installed in 1935, was already synonymous with Dixon’s name, and his broadcasts from the Tower Ballroom had made him one of the most recognisable organists in the country. The three numbers here are a fine example of his sensitive registration choices, balanced phrasing, and that subtle Dixon lift that kept the dancers gliding around the famous Tower floor.
