Indoor skydiving has surged in popularity as a fun, safe, and accessible way to experience the sensation of freefall without jumping out of an airplane. Vertical wind tunnels, the technology behind indoor skydiving, allow participants to float and perform aerial maneuvers in a controlled environment. But like any emerging industry, indoor skydiving is often misunderstood. Myths and misconceptions about the operation, safety, and efficiency of wind tunnels abound.
To address these myths, AERODIUM, the world’s most experienced company in vertical wind tunnel technology, recently hosted a comprehensive webinar to shed light on these common myths and misconceptions. AERODIUM has been a pioneer in the industry for over 45 years. During the webinar, several key experts from the company shared their knowledge, helping to clear up the confusion surrounding vertical wind tunnels. In this blog, we will dive deep into five prevalent myths about indoor skydiving and vertical wind tunnels, with insights provided by AERODIUM’s technical and flying experts.
Myth 5: Cheaper Wind Tunnels Are Better for Business
Price is always a key consideration in any industry, and the vertical wind tunnel industry is no different. However, there’s a persistent myth that building a cheaper wind tunnel is a better business decision. While it’s true that lower upfront costs may be appealing, they often come at the expense of quality, safety, and long-term profitability.
AERODIUM’s webinar highlighted a compelling case study from their wind tunnel project in Kyiv, Ukraine. Despite the challenges of opening a business during wartime, AERODIUM successfully launched a wind tunnel in 2023. They faced competition from a nearby wind tunnel that offered significantly lower prices, charging nearly half of what AERODIUM charged.
However, the lower prices didn’t translate into better business outcomes. According to Andy Durnford, customers quickly realized that AERODIUM’s wind tunnel offered a far superior experience. Flyers reported more consistent airflow, better instruction, and enhanced safety features, including patented innovations that made flying safer and more enjoyable.
In the end, AERODIUM’s tunnel outperformed the cheaper competitor in terms of both popularity and profitability. The lesson? Cutting corners on quality or safety to save money may seem like a smart decision in the short term, but it can ultimately lead to underperforming tunnels that fail to attract repeat business.
As Ivars Beitans noted during the webinar, quoting Benjamin Franklin: “The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.”
The Reality of Cheaper Vertical Wind Tunnels
While it might be tempting to opt for cheaper wind tunnels, quality, safety, and performance should be prioritized to ensure long-term success. Investing in a high-quality wind tunnel pays off in the long run.
