Описание: Indoor skydiving has surged in popularity as a fun, safe, and accessible way to experience the sensation of freefall without jumping out of an airplane. Vertical wind tunnels, the technology behind indoor skydiving, allow participants to float and perform aerial maneuvers in a controlled environment. But like any emerging industry, indoor skydiving is often misunderstood. Myths and misconceptions about the operation, safety, and efficiency of wind tunnels abound.

To address these myths, AERODIUM, the world’s most experienced company in vertical wind tunnel technology, recently hosted a comprehensive webinar to shed light on these common myths and misconceptions. AERODIUM has been a pioneer in the industry for over 45 years. During the webinar, several key experts from the company shared their knowledge, helping to clear up the confusion surrounding vertical wind tunnels. In this blog, we will dive deep into five prevalent myths about indoor skydiving and vertical wind tunnels, with insights provided by AERODIUM’s technical and flying experts.

Myth 3: Passive Cooling Is More Effective

One of the more technical myths in the industry is that passive cooling systems, which rely on natural airflow to regulate temperature, are better or more cost-effective than active cooling systems, which use heat exchangers to manage airflow.

Arnis Rubins, AERODIUM’s Chief Technical Officer, addressed this misconception by comparing the two systems. In a passive cooling setup, hot air is vented out through hatches, and cooler air from the atmosphere is drawn in. While this system might seem straightforward, it presents significant challenges in warm climates or during the summer months. Rubins pointed out that as global temperatures rise, it’s not uncommon for outside air temperatures to reach 30- 40°C, especially in areas like Western Europe or the U.S. When the external temperature is that high, a passive cooling system cannot sufficiently cool the wind tunnel, leading to unsafe flying conditions.

By contrast, active cooling systems use a closed-loop system where the air is actively cooled through heat exchangers placed in the turning veins of the wind tunnel. This setup not only ensures more consistent temperature control but also eliminates many of the issues that come with passive systems, such as noise pollution and air disruption. In fact, AERODIUM found that active cooling systems can reduce power consumption by up to 30% compared to passive systems, while maintaining more stable temperatures and quieter operation.

In a real-world comparison, AERODIUM implemented both passive and active cooling systems in different wind tunnels and found that active cooling consistently provided better performance, particularly in maintaining comfortable temperatures during peak usage periods. Additionally, active cooling systems prevent noise from escaping the tunnel, which is a major advantage in urban or residential settings where noise pollution can be a concern.

While passive cooling may be suitable for certain climates, active cooling systems offer superior performance, especially in warmer environments. They help maintain a consistent temperature, reduce noise pollution, and ensure safer flying conditions.
