This final episode in my ten part series is all about magnificent Campbell Island. It was such a shock after weeks of subdued colour palettes, mostly white, black and blue, to suddenly be confronted with an explosion of greens and yellows. It took a while for the brain to re-interpret this as normal.
We spent two days at the island, cruising the sensational ocean cliffs and waterfalls in the zodiacs, penguin and albatross spotting, and finished with a seriously hard hike around the island through trackless terrain, with teeming wildlife and stunning views.
It is hard to pick a highlight of Campbell Island but if I did it would have to be spending a whole afternoon in a Southern Royal Albatross colony high up in the mountains, feeling like one of the birds myself. When they stand up and go off for a walk they are as big as a medium-sized dog, and the displays between adults back at the nest after a day’s feeding is nothing short of breathtaking.
Unfortunately the journey of a lifetime is over once again. Thanks to all who have watched the videos and shared the experience with me.
Cruise run by Heritage Expeditions, New Zealand.
