In this sermon, we ask a vital question: If Jesus established one church in Acts of the Apostles chapter 2, how did we arrive at thousands of different denominations today?
Beginning with the image of a pomegranate grown in Jerusalem—sweet, rich, and unchanged wherever it is planted—we’re reminded that what God planted was meant to produce the same fruit in every place and generation. The early church devoted themselves to the apostles’ doctrine, the fellowship, the breaking of bread, and prayers. There was one body, one gospel, and one plan of salvation.
So what happened?
Through powerful Old Testament examples like Uzzah and the ark (1 Chronicles 13–15) and the restoration under Ezra (Nehemiah 8), we see the danger of adding to or subtracting from what God has written. When David transported the ark in a way God never authorized, it brought tragedy. When the people rediscovered what was written and returned to the pattern, it brought rejoicing.
The lesson is clear:
God blesses obedience to His pattern. Division and confusion arise when we alter it.
We also examine the plan of salvation revealed in Acts of the Apostles 2:38 and contrast it with modern additions not found in Scripture. If we plant the same seed preached at Pentecost, God will produce the same church He established in the beginning.
The invitation remains simple and urgent:
Return to what is written
Follow the original pattern
Obey the gospel as it was first preached
If we preach the same gospel, we will produce the same disciples.
