A team of Chinese astronomers have discovered a high-quality site for astronomical observatory on the Tibetan Plateau, which will help overcome bottlenecks in the development of China's optical astronomical observation and bridge the discovery gap between existing world-class sites.
The site is located on the Saishiteng Mountain in Lenghu township, Qinghai's Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. The findings of this study were published in the academic journal Nature on August 18.
After spending three years of field survey, scientist from the National Astronomical Observatory of China chose the location at an altitude of around 4,200 meters for its ideal weather and climate conditions.
"It has plentiful sunshine. The cloudless time during the day lasts 10 hours, while the night skies are extraordinary clear. This is the first feature. The second feature of this place is that it is extremely arid, which receives very little annual precipitation," said Deng Licai, principal researcher from the National Astronomical Observatories affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
Through three years of continuous data gathering, scientists found out the medium value of astronomical seeing in Lenghu is 0.75 arc seconds, which is rated as world-class in terms of astronomical seeing, a technical term for the blurring effect caused by turbulence in Earth's atmosphere that smears a telescope image.
According to data, the observable time at Lenghu is up to 83 percent of nights in a year, indicating the site has outperformed other potential locations on Tibetan Plateau, and comparable to the world's leading observatories in Chile and Hawaii.
"The Tibetan Plateau locates on the Eastern Hemisphere, which has no high-quality observatory between Hawaii and Europe. So if we can bridge the huge gap between these places, it will greatly benefit the observations," said Deng.
