Explore the space in China's oldest observatory on the peak of Shanghai's Sheshan Hill

This telescope was ordered in France in 1898. It was shipped to China in 1900 and placed on top of Sheshan Mountain. That’s why at the bottom of the telescope we can see its inscription: Paris 1899.

It was officially launched in 1901.Exactly 120 years ago. Many of its optical components have been broken or damaged. Other parts became moldy overtime. We hope that with some material updates and some repairs, it will be in the best shape to observe the universe.

Another important part is its dome. The dome itself is a rotatable mechanical part. It has skylights, both side of which can be pulled sideways. And show the window through which the telescope can look out and observe the sky. In order to get panoramic views, the dome is designed to be able to rotate 360 degrees.

From 1901 until it was withdrawn from the scientific front line in the late 1990s, it took nearly 7,000 negatives. Which recorded a large number of celestial objects and historical events. Its first photograph was a picture of the Moon taken in the fall of 1901. The resolution of which is very high. After all, it is the earliest large astronomical telescope in China. It was also the largest telescope in Asia at the time and can now be recognized as the top telescope in the Far East.
