In this Ub Iwerks–directed Flip the Frog short, Flip and his dog go on the chase for the notorious Chinese criminal **Chow Mein**, who has just broken out of jail.
Their hunt leads them into a stereotyped Chinese laundry and then into a surreal **opium den**, where Flip accidentally inhales opium from a pipe—and begins hallucinating wildly.
He experiences bizarre visions: wobbly scenery, floating clouds of smoke, and dreamlike transformations (including a dragon-lady) as he pursues his target.
The cartoon reflects the more risqué, gritty style Iwerks adopted in his later work, and includes heavy use of racial caricature typical of its time.
This short was later restored from 35mm nitrate prints, showing how film preservationists are bringing back even the controversial entries in early animation history.
