Anticipating the upcoming technical working groups for the anti-disinformation bills, I'm resharing my reaction to Dr. Didith Rodrigo and her team’s paper: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.c...
Thank you Dr. Rodrigo, for calling us to act. Disinformation is no longer a distant threat. It is already shaping public life.
Dr. Rodrigo’s paper gets something right: AI is neither good nor bad on its own. It depends on how we govern it. That balance matters.
But deepfakes are not a future problem. They are here now. Fake videos, voices, and stories spread every day. Some are political. Some look harmless. All of them weaken trust.
Many hope AI will save us by detecting truth. But AI is not reliable enough. It flags real content and misses fake ones. Relying on it as a judge risks censorship and deception.
The real problem is not speech. It is amplification.
Disinformation today is paid for and pushed. Organic posts reach few people. Paid campaigns reach many. This is not chaos. It is an industry.
Freedom of speech is protected. Freedom of reach is not. No one has a right to algorithmic megaphones or industrial manipulation.
AI should focus on detecting paid campaigns and coordinated spread, not deciding truth.
Because once a machine decides truth for us, someone else decides what we are allowed to believe.
