When Birds Win, Cats Slip, and Comedy Meets Canvas
Sometimes songs come from heartbreak, sometimes from history… and sometimes they come from fifteen extremely confident birds sitting on a telegraph line watching a cat absolutely lose the plot.
Pussy Cat, Where Are You? is one of those wonderfully playful musical moments where imagination, visual art, and comedy collide. The spark for the song came from the whimsical and charming artwork of Liubov Gorbova, whose beautifully animated scenes helped paint the picture of a determined but slightly overconfident feline attempting to scale a snow-covered pole while a row of unimpressed birds sit above, providing running commentary like feathered sports commentators.
The lyric immediately throws listeners into the frosty battlefield:
“Fifteen birdies
siting on a Telegraph line
It’s a cold wintery view huddled under snow
Heavy
Oh Pussy cat up the pole bright eyed something
Something’s not right look down there
He’s Not on our side
A pounce not nice ready ready set go
Look he fell in the snow what a show
Up again another go have another go
All white pussy what a sight right
Well pussy cat pussy cat have another go"
From there, the story unfolds like a slapstick cartoon where the pussy cat repeatedly attempts heroic leaps… only to perform gravity-assisted snow landings that become the show itself. The birds, naturally, provide encouragement — the sarcastic kind. Its musical theatre meets Saturday morning animation, with a touch of old-school vaudeville humour.
The finishing ingredient that helped shape the lyric’s fast-paced comedy and voice characterisation was the legendary improvisational brilliance of Robin Williams. His rapid-fire storytelling style, shifting voices, and playful absurdity inspired the energetic chatter between birds, the exaggerated commentary, and the rhythm that dances between musical storytelling and comic performance.
Lines like:
“Move like this Chaplin penguin duck,
Waddle waddle talk like this…”
showcase a layered humour that blends physical comedy, character acting, and musical rhythm. The song becomes less about a cat climbing a pole and more about persistence, pride, and the universal comedy of trying again after falling flat — literally into snow.
At its heart, the song celebrates resilience wrapped inside playful chaos. The pussy cat keeps climbing. The birds keep laughing. And the audience keeps smiling. It’s a reminder that sometimes failure isn’t defeat — it’s entertainment… especially when whiskers are covered in snow and the crowd is tweeting approval from above.
Pussy Cat, Where Are You? stands as a joyful example of how at times my songwriting often blends storytelling, humour, visual inspiration, and theatrical imagination into a musical cartoon for the ears — proving that sometimes the most meaningful songs are the ones that simply make us laugh, picture the scene, and cheer for the underdog… or undercat.
