Learning to draw portraits doesn’t start with faces, proportions, or anatomy. It starts with understanding what drawing actually is.
Drawing isn’t the act of copying a head or assembling features. It’s the act of seeing relationships—light against dark, one shape against another, edges appearing and disappearing. Until this is clear, portraits become symbols: eyes, noses, mouths placed according to rules rather than observation.
When you understand drawing as a response to what you see, portraits stop being intimidating. A face becomes no different from any other subject—it’s just shapes, tones, and transitions observed in real time.
Establishing what drawing is shifts the entire process. You stop trying to construct a likeness and start responding to it. That’s where real portrait drawing begins.
