This was Nikita's First climb ever! She had a blast as you can see . : ) The Third Flatiron is the perfect adventure for someone wanting to see what multi pitch climbing is all about.
Climbing the Third Flatiron in Boulder, Colorado, is an iconic endeavor on this towering slab of rock. It's one of the most prominent among the Flatirons, offering a blend of adventure, challenge, and scenic beauty that is hard to match.
Access to the climb starts from the Chautauqua Park, a historic area offering access to a network of trails leading into Boulder's mountain backdrop. The approach involves a hike through picturesque settings, ascending through meadows and pine forests to reach the base of the climb. This journey itself is a rewarding part of the experience, setting the stage for the climb ahead.
The standard East Face route on the Third Flatiron is rated as a 5.4, making it an accessible adventure for climbers with basic skills and also a fun outing for more experienced climbers. The climb is characterized by its long, sweeping slabs of rock, offering pitches that are more about balance and friction than technical moves.
It's approximately 1,000 vertical feet, usually climbed in 5 to 7 pitches, depending on how parties choose to divide the climb. The nature of the climbing is mostly slab with occasional cracks and ledges for gear placement and rests. Climbers will find that while the route is low in difficulty, there are sections with significant exposure and the potential for long runouts between placements. A standard rack of cams, nuts, and slings is recommended for those looking to place protection, though many find the climbing secure enough to move quickly with minimal gear.
Reaching the summit of the Third Flatiron is a rewarding experience, offering unparalleled views of Boulder, the surrounding mountains, and the eastern Colorado plains. The descent typically involves a few rappels from the summit, requiring at least a 60-meter rope, and careful navigation to safely return to the base.
If you choose the 3rd, you should be comfortable with multi-pitch climbing and managing long runouts on slabby terrain. Despite its moderate rating, the exposure on the Third Flatiron demands respect and careful climbing. An early start is advisable to avoid the crowds and to ensure a leisurely pace can be maintained without pressure.
