Title:
"Clinical application of neuroimaging studies for neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy"
Abstract:
Neuroimaging plays a critical role in understanding brain injury and recovery in neonates with
hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Our studies demonstrate that brain injury can already be detected as early as day 2 of life, providing valuable information to guide prognosis and care. Using advanced MRI sequences, we can not only identify the presence and extent of injury but also capture early signs of brain repair and plasticity. These findings highlight the potential of neuroimaging to improve clinical decision-making and to inform the development of targeted therapies for affected infants.
Biographical Summary:
Dr. Pia Wintermark is a pediatrician, neonatologist, and clinician-scientist. She trained at
Lausanne University Hospital (Switzerland) and Boston Children’s Hospital (Harvard Medical School) before founding the NeoBrainLab at the Montreal Children’s Hospital, McGill University, and the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre in 2010. Her research focuses on neonatal brain injury, integrating advanced neuroimaging, bedside monitoring, and laboratory models to better understand brain damage in critically ill newborns and to develop strategies for its prevention and repair.
