Title:
"VMAT Total Body Irradiation"
Abstract:
Total Body Irradiation (TBI) is a mature treatment technique dating back more than 70 years where current clinical guidance for TBI (AAPM TG29) was published approximately 40 years ago. Since that time, there have been significant improvements in the field of radiation oncology including widespread implementation of IGRT, IMRT, advanced treatment planning techniques, accurate dose calculation algorithms, etc. This leaves room for improvements of this treatment technique to bring it into the modern era. Multi-isocenter VMAT-based TBI is one such modern alternative to these historical methods of TBI. This talk will discuss the historical background of TBI and modern alternatives with a focus on VMAT TBI. The physics commissioning, the treatment process (simulation to treatment), and toxicities and outcomes data will be reviewed and compared to historical TBI techniques.
Biographical Summary:
Dr. Simiele is an assistant professor and clinical physicist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Prior to UAB he held a faculty appointment at Rutgers University, performed his residency training at Stanford University, and graduate education at The University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is the lead physicist on the total body irradiation program at UAB and has published numerous articles on the subject of intensity modulated TBI with a focus on VMAT TBI.
