This veil lifting is a profound moment of realization, and it occurs both for you and the Narcissist. Regardless of whether you were involved with a single Narcissist, a toxic family unit, or a workplace group, and no matter the exact nature of the relationship, a massive shift occurs once it ends. Your lives begin to follow two completely different, diverging paths.
It is incredibly important to understand a fundamental truth: time does not heal the Narcissist.
For you, time is an ally. While time alone isn't a magic cure, it provides the space you need to learn how to cope, to process your trauma, and to heal from the devastating experience. But the Narcissist does not heal. In fact, over time, their true nature becomes entirely more exposed.
As years pass, the immense energy required to keep up their false persona begins to drain them. People around them begin to see through their carefully constructed façade. The Narcissist always leaves a lasting impression initially, often one of charm or competence. But gradually, the people in their orbit start to recognize the hollowness underneath. This exposure grows exponentially with time. The Narcissist does not recover from this loss of control; in fact, as the years tick by, navigating the world becomes increasingly difficult for them.
During their own journey, the Narcissist’s situation worsens instead of improving. Narcissists operate from a deep, hidden core of shame and inadequacy. They spend their entire lives building defenses to avoid looking at that core. Although they may initially feel elated or victorious when the relationship ends—believing they have "won" or escaped accountability—a different kind of awareness eventually emerges.
They attempt to distract themselves through various means—work, new hobbies, or impulsive behaviors—but the inescapable clarity of time reveals that they are not healing. Instead, the passing years only magnify their flaws and their inability to form genuine human connections.
This brings us to a crucial phase in their timeline: the introduction of the New Supply. Often, survivors feel a pang of devastation when they see the Narcissist move on quickly to a New Supply. It looks like they have found happiness, that they have changed, or that they are finally the perfect partner. But this is nothing more than a mirage.
The New Supply is not a person to the Narcissist; they are an object, a mirror meant to reflect back the Narcissist’s grandiosity. But just like every relationship they enter, the honeymoon phase comes with an expiration date. As the years pass, the New Supply will inevitably fail to meet the Narcissist's impossible, endless demands for validation. The mask will slip again. The conflicts will arise again.
