Описание: “The Ghost in the Chair” is a classic supernatural tale by Lettice Galbraith, first appearing in her 1893 collection New Ghost Stories. Galbraith’s collection enjoyed multiple printings as a “sixpenny novel,” and this particular story has endured as one of her best-known works.

A troubled mining company convenes a shareholders’ meeting in a cavernous hall. The company’s fortunes seem lost—until their absent chairman miraculously appears, delivers a stirring, eloquent address that rescues the enterprise from financial ruin, then vanishes. Moments later, the company doctor bursts in to reveal that the chairman had in fact died—two hours before his appearance—and had been dead for some time. A frantic search of the late chairman’s papers yields an even more unsettling secret about the source of his posthumous intervention.

“Lettice Galbraith” was the nom de plume of Lizzie Susan Gibson (1859–1932), a Yorkshire‐born writer whose true identity remained obscure for over a century. She burst onto the literary scene in the early 1890s with several short ghost stories—and then abruptly vanished from print. Recent archival research in the British Library’s Society of Authors records has confirmed her real name and life story.
