Deng Shichang was the captain of the Chinese cruiser Zhiyuan in the Beiyang Fleet and was a native of Panyu, Guangdong (now part of Guangzhou). The museum uses historical photographs, document reproductions, ship models, and other exhibits to detail Deng Shichang's life, the historical context of the war, and the heroic final charge of the Zhiyuan. The displays convey a strong theme of patriotism. The museum grounds are quiet and shaded by old trees.
