The Hudson Motor Car company was founded by Howard Coffin, George W. Dunham, and Roy E. Chapin. Hudson was based in Detroit, Michigan. It was named after their primary backer, department store owner Joseph L. Hudson. A single year after it was created, Hudson was the eleventh-largest auto company in America. Hudsons were advanced for the times. They put the steering wheel on the left and hand levers in the center, and adopted GM's self-starter earlier than most makers, making cars easier and safer to start. Within ten years Hudson was the third-largest automaker in the United States. Despite the popular and inexpensive Essex and Essex-Terraplane, the Great Depression mortally wounded Hudson. Hudson began to eliminate Essex in favor of the Terraplane brand, and by 1934 they were just Terraplanes. For World War II, Hudson converted its factories to make war materials; many military boats were powered by Hudson Invader engines. Hudson coupled with Nash in 1954 to become American Motors Corporation or AMC. Chrysler bought AMC in 1989. The remnants of Hudson, Nash, and Willys helped to lead Chrysler Corporation to a new golden age.
In 1936, Hudson brought out its "radial safety control" or "rhythmic ride" suspension. This let Hudson use longer and softer leaf springs for a smoother ride, while maintaining directional stability. Features were impressive, including hydraulic brakes as well as a more cushioned ride, draft elimination, and "tru-line steering," which enabled the car to hold its direction, without swerving or wandering. Hudson claimed both the world's safest chassis and the first car body made entirely of steel. The six cylinder engine was an in-line, L-head design (not V6, but I-6) with 3" bore, 5" stroke, 212 cubic inches and 6.25:1 compression.
Vanguard Motor Sales is proud to present this 1936 Hudson Terraplane 2 door sedan. This 6 cylinder motor and 3 speed transmission runs and drives great! It has a super solid steel body, and with beautiful black paint with red pinstripes, it is absolutely stunning. The chrome bumpers look great as well. You can tell that this vehicle has been well taken care of over the years. It has had a recent tune up, including a re-cored radiator, new brakes, and new Firestone whitewall tires.
Open up the suicide doors and check out the interior. The interior has considerable space for six passengers. The rear seats have what seems like incredible leg room, and even with the sloping roof there is still plenty of room for tall passengers. The driver's seat is adjustable, which was a feature not to be common for many years. The floor shifter, olive green upholstery, wood grain details and classic dash and gauges display an amazing amount of character. There are a couple of aftermarket gauges under the dash as well as a functional Tropic Aire system! This car really takes you back in time.
We have the original owners manual and books of documentation on maintenance and repairs made to the vehicle. I can't tell you how many thumbs-up I got driving this car around town. Don't miss out on this opportunity to own a piece of automotive history! Call today! 248-974-9513
