While action fans wait for the highly anticipated fourth season of Reacher to debut, star Alan Ritchson isn't taking any breaks. The popular Reacher lead can now be seen in Netflix's sci-fi actioner War Machine, which was released on the streaming service Friday morning. The film sees Ritchson playing a combat engineer trying to complete his final mission of Army Ranger training, only to come face-to-face with an enormous and deadly killing machine from another world. It plays quite a bit like Predator, but Ritchson's character, 81, actually shares a lot of common ground with Jack Reacher himself.
Like Reacher, War Machine's 81 is incredibly resourceful. It seems like he can think his way out of any kind of dangerous situation on the fly, and he's got the physical acumen to back up any of those plans. 81 also likes to keep to himself and operate as a solo agent as often as possible — a trademark of Jack Reacher — but his reasons for going it alone are much different. It's easy to see the similarities between these two characters, and Alan Ritchson took a lot of what he learned with Reacher to take War Machine's action "to the next level."
Ahead of War Machine's release, Collider had the chance to chat with Ritchson and director Patrick Hughes about the new action-thriller. Ritchson spoke about the similarities (and major differences) between his character in this film and Reacher, as well as how the Prime Video series prepared him to take War Machine's unique challenges.
"There is a lot of overlap. They're both very physical roles. There's a lot of action. I think the big difference is that internal life. 81 is a little bit like Reacher if he experienced trauma the way that most of us do. 81 carries a lot of shame, and you watch that internal struggle to understand who he is and how he relates to the world as the adventure progresses, and that's something that we don't really see in Reacher. He doesn't struggle with any of these decisions he makes. He's fine with his own moral code and that kind of thing. So, there's a big difference there, that inner life.
"Then I would say, physically, this is like taking everything we do on Reacher to the next level. I have a tremendous respect for the show, but we don't go on to the kind of locations that we went on, we don't go as big with the kind of action that 81 experienced. I've not done that on Reacher. So, everything was just bigger and more, internally and externally."
'Reacher' Will Be Even Better in Season 4
Speaking of Reacher, it's been more than a year since the third season of the Lee Child series debuted, and there hasn't been any word from Prime Video as to when we might see the show back with Season 4. With filming already wrapped, all eyes are on the release date announcement.
Ritchson didn't go as far as to reveal any specific date regarding the new season of Reacher, but he did confirm to us that it'll definitely arrive at some point this year. He also said that the fourth installment is the best the show has ever been, which is a pretty high bar to clear.
Well, we finished shooting Season 4 of Reacher. It's by far the best season we've had yet, so it's coming. It'll be out this year.
When Ritchson talks about going out to real locations and filming big stunts for War Machine, you clearly see what he's talking about when you watch the movie. There's a depth and tactile nature to the setting of the film that you couldn't re-create on a sound stage. It makes for a visual experience that we don't see nearly as often as we should nowadays, especially with movies made for streaming.
