Callaway claimed its first-ever state championship with a hard-fought 22-17 upset over top-ranked Fitzgerald. Running back Charlie Dixon was the difference-maker, rushing for 229 yards on 27 carries, including a game-clinching 69-yard touchdown run with just two minutes left. The Cavaliers, ranked sixth entering the game, outlasted a tough Fitzgerald defense led by future Georgia Bulldog E.J. Lightsey, who recorded 2.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. The loss marked Fitzgerald’s third title game defeat in six years.
