Fluffy joined us as we were heading to her area. Jay retrieved her dry food dish located behind a bush. I dumped and rinsed out her water dish and her water dish was almost filled, Fluffy stuck her head under for a quick drink of water. I put two handfuls of dry food into her dish and she ate a few bites before we headed to the groundcover. At the groundcover she finished the chewable flea and tick treatment before Jay put down cat treats for her.
On the eastern hillside pasture, just before Whispering Hills Ranch, Jay spotted someone on a fence post. I zoomed in but with the distance I was unable to verify which small raptor it was. I suspected it was an American Kestrel. Even with a larger viewing screen at home I ended up having to pull up images of American Kestrels to be able to indicate that it was a female American Kestrel whose colors are not bold like the males.
Kali was at the Lutheran Church on the decorative fence that mostly obscured her from view. Jay headed to the church's side walkway and after a few moments, so did Kali. When Jay was finished with putting food down for her and stood up, Kali started to slowly head to the food, making sure Jay walked away. She was eating as we continued our walk.
Jay spotted a RedTailed Hawk perched on Whispering Hills Ranch's Eucalyptus tree. I made a short video as the hawk had its back towards us.
CC was at the back area of Alviso Adobe Park. While I was busy putting the food down for the songbirds at the back area of the park, Jay made a brief video of CC before putting CC's food on the low rock wall. When CC was finished with his breakfast, Jay put a few more cat treats on the ground and I made a video as he decided to come off the rock wall to eat the cat treats on the ground. Both Jay and I made a video of the Spotted Towhee that came to take a peanut half, then quickly leave. I also made a few short videos of the various songbirds that showed up for food. We had White-crowned Sparrows, Golden-crowned Sparrow, my Song Sparrow Buddy, and a California Towhee. While we were making the video of the songbirds enjoying the food, we both hear the lovely song of a bird on a nearby bush. Jay did a quickly Merlin App search after recording the song of the songbird, while I scanned the tall bushes and located the small songbird. Turns out it was a Bewick's Wren that we have seen in the picnic area but had not seen in the back area of the park. While I was making the video of him, he was singing and impressed us with how loud he was for such a small songbird who is only 5 to 6 inches tall. Today's Thumbnail Photo Is The Bewick's Wren
On our return trip, we heard the crowing sound of one of Whispering Hills Ranch's Roosters and Jay spotted three of their hens walking on the embankment near Evans Road. I made a short video and we watched to be sure they did not venture out onto the street. After I finished my video, the chickens went back under the fence and off the embankment.
On one of the Redwood cluster trees that are west of the Poppy Lane Condos, Jay spotted a RedTailed Hawk. The hawk was facing us and we could see that it was an adult. While I was making a few short videos of the hawk, he took flight, heading towards the hillside. When we were able to spot him on the eastern hillside pasture, I turned on my camera as he took flight again. I followed him he flew behind the ranch's Cypress trees.
Fluffy was not at her area upon our return. While I whistled and called Fluffy, Jay put the rest of the dry food into her dish. Instead of returning from Rebecca's by way of the fence top, Fluffy too the fence path. Once she was back at her area, Jay put cat treats on the sidewalk and Fluffy ate them. After I turned off my camera, I removed a burr that was attached to the underside of her tail. I did it quickly and had the extra protection of my thick winter gloves on.
Sonny showed up at his area as we were getting ready to leave. I had finished putting more bird food down for the House Sparrows because Doves and a Ground Squirrel assist in eating the food, when Sonny showed up. Jay put the container of live mealworms on the groundcover. I thought Sonny might eat a mealworm and then take a mealworm with him. Nope, he took a mealworm and quickly flew away.
