There are three lighthouses that stand between Point Lonsdale and Queenscliff, these are the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse, situated at the far south end of Port Phillip Bay, the Queenscliff High Light and the Queenscliff Low Light, both standing on Shortland’s Bluff. There are also two towers that stand on either side of the Queenscliff Low Light, these are the Hume Tower and the Murray Tower. Today, the Point Lonsdale lighthouse is the only manned lighthouse, open to the public for tours, although all lighthouses still assist ships in navigation through Port Phillip Heads.
The entrance to Port Phillip Bay is only a very narrow channel, surrounded by shallow reefs and bombies. This makes navigation through the rip very difficult with no room for error. These lights all play a vital role in ensuring a ship’s safe navigation through the south channel.
The Queenscliff High Light, or more commonly known as the Black Lighthouse is quite significant, being only one of three black lighthouses in the whole world, and the only one present in the southern hemisphere. It was constructed in 1862 alongside the Queenscliff Low Light, after replacing an older, unpowered sandstone lighthouse which had begun to deteriorate. The new lighthouse was constructed from basalt, and there are multiple different theories about where the basalt actually came from. The theory that is currently told by tour guides today is that the entire lighthouse was cut in Scotland, transported here and assembled on-site.
