The Common dolphin is one of the dolphin species seen here in Victoria. These animals are easily identifiable as they are slightly shorter than the Bottlenose dolphin, and have a unique hourglass pattern along their sides. This pattern is made up by the combination of yellow and white patches crossing over one another.
Common dolphins are often found travelling in large pods anywhere from 10 to 50 animals to even a few hundred animals all together, which can make for quite an amazing experience from the surface. These dolphins are very acrobatic, commonly seen porpoising in large groups at high speeds as well as leaping out of the water in synchronised movements with one another.
For many years the common dolphins were separated into two subspecies, being the Short-Beaked Common Dolphin and the Long-Beaked Common Dolphin. The most visible difference is that the Short Beaked Common dolphin is slightly shorter, with a more rounded melon than the Long Beaked Common Dolphin. Although, scientific advances now suggest that the Common Dolphin is in-fact one species.
