Route 242 runs every 10 to 12 minutes. The route runs from 05:00 until 01:27. It is 6 miles (10 km) long. A full journey takes 40 to 70 minutes.

Route 242 commenced in 1998. It was originally ran by Arriva London from Clapton (CT) garage. In November 1998, new ALX400s entered service. In January 2003, the N242 night service was introduced. This was cancelled in 2004, as the 242 was converted into a 24 hour service. The 242 moved from Clapton (CT) to Stamford Hill (SF) in 2006. The route was then transferred back to Clapton garage in 2009. New Gemini 2s were introduced in 2010. And in 2017, new Gemini 3 hybrids entered service.

On the 17th of June 2017, the 242 was cut to St Paul's. It was then withdrawn between Shoreditch and St Paul's and re-routed to Aldgate in 2019. The night service was also renumbered as the N242.

In 2024, Stagecoach London began running the route. This was the first time the 242's operator had changed since its introduction in 1998.
