Located within Greater London, and around eight miles east, and slightly north, of Tower Bridge, is the town of Barking.
The name 'Barking' is derived from Old English 'Berica' and 'ingas', where Berica was the name of a Saxon settler. Its known history stretches back to 666 AD when St Erkenwald founded Barking Abbey. This was later used by William the Conqueror as a temporary headquarters while the Tower of London was under construction.
Adjacent to the abbey is St Margaret's Church. This dates back to 1215, although the main body of the church dates from the 14th and 15th centuries. Originally a chapel within the grounds of the abbey, it later became a parish church. As such, it survived the Dissolution of the Monasteries of the 16th century which saw the destruction of Barking Abbey, although the Curfew Tower was spared. The tower dates from 1370 and was rebuilt in 1460. Its name comes from the curfew bell which rang at the end of the day, and is the sole survivor of the abbey's three gateways. In 1762 Captain James Cook was married at St Margaret's Church.
During the late 12th century, a market charter was granted to Barking by Henry II. Historically the main industry in the town was fishing. A fleet operated from Barking Creek which is located at the mouth of the River Roding, a tributary of the Thames. Additionally many of Henry VIII’s ships were repaired and maintained in the area. The fishing industry would eventually decline from around the mid 19th century, coinciding with the opening of the Royal Dock in Grimsby.
In 1854 the railway arrived in Barking, courtesy of the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway. Today it is part of the London Underground network and is a stop on the District and Hammersmith & City lines as well as the London Overground and National Rail, the latter of which provides direct services to Southend-on-Sea among other locations.
Historically, Barking was located within the county of Essex up until 1965 with the formation of the ceremonial county of Greater London. Concurrently, the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham was created, within which Barking is situated.
Famous people from Barking include Bobby Moore, Trevor Brooking, Billy Bragg, Ross Kemp and John Terry.
