We are in Kot Mirza Jaan, a historic village located in Tehsil Kamonki, District Gujranwala, Pakistan. During the Partition of Punjab, two real brothers, Mangal Singh and Ishar Singh, were tragically killed by local Muslims who once worked for them. Mangal Singh was murdered on his way back from his in-laws’ home, and when his horse returned alone, the family realized he had been killed. Later, Ishar Singh was also attacked — though he bravely defended himself and killed one of his assailants, he was eventually slain despite offering to convert to Islam to save his life.

An elder who witnessed these horrific Partition events told us that both brothers were kind-hearted and respected by all. Before Partition, the village head was Jhanda Singh. The village had both a mosque and a gurdwara, and an ancient shrine (dargah) still exists today where fairs are held twice a year, mostly funded by the Sikh community back then.

Major communities in the village include Hanjra, Awan, Ghumman, Rajput, and Makhanpuri Julaaha. Nearby villages include Bhagwala, Sahanakay Bajwa, Sambla, Eman Pura, Rajewala, and Kotli Nawab — all rich in shared Sikh-Muslim history and memories of Partition.
