For more than two years we were unable to hold one of our annual herding trials because of the travel restrictions due to COVID-19. They were lifted late last fall and we were able to secure an SV herding judge for a trial this year on May 14th.
Four dogs competed on this hot and sunny spring day at White Clover Sheep Farm. I started the competition with the first run with a German Shepherd Dog of my own breeding, Ivana vom Quasliner Moor. She is owned by Susan Sopranzi and co-owned by me. We received 93 points (out of 100) and received the highest grade of “Vorzüglich” (Excellent).
Our judge was the SV Herding Judge Kerstin Smietana, the first and thus far only female herding judge of the SV. She graciously took on this assignment on very short notice when our original judge Herbert Kind had a stroke less than two weeks prior to this trial. (Herbert will make a full recovery from his stroke).
I have been competing in SV herding competitions for more than 30 years and this was the first time I was being judged by a person younger than me. That day had to come, eh?
