One exciting thing about studying dialect variation is that by comparing results to previous studies, we can see how dialects change over time. A difficulty, though, is that Our Dialects uses a different method to the Survey of English Dialects. In the Survey of English Dialects, researchers focused on collecting data from nonmobile, older rural male speakers (NORMS). This was because they wanted to record dialects they thought were at risk of dying out, and thought that NORMS were the most likely to maintain older dialect features.
By comparison, many participants in the Our Dialects project are students, and tend to skew female and younger. As students often move away from home to attend university, the sample in Our Dialects is likely to be much more mobile than the sample in the Survey of English Dialects, and participants are more likely to have encountered a wider range of linguistic forms.
How do you think each of the study’s sampling methods might affect their results? What do you think the advantages and disadvantages of collecting data online are?
