Print advertisements are a text and image-based medium which are used to convey a message on behalf of an organisation or group. They are designed to ‘sell’ a message.
What is Print Advertising?
Based in Print: As the name suggests, print advertising is physically printed
Magazine and Newspaper: These ads are targeted to reach readers of a particular publication
Posters and Billboards: These ads are targeted at passers-by and are often much shorter
Web Site Advertising: While they are not print, the ads you will study use techniques similar to print advertising.
Visuals: Are deliberately chosen and manipulated, They are a part of the message, Direct the viewer’s gaze, Evoke mood and emotion, Are distinctive, Use of text can also be a visual tool.
Text: Language of Advertising
Language (called ‘copy’) is direct and focused toward conveying the ad’s message
Tag Line
Will use a catchy or interesting tag line to stick in the viewer’s mind
Emotional and Sensory
Tries to attach itself to an emotional and sensory response in its audience (e.g. feeling ‘good’, hungry)
The Message:
Exposure
As we are bombarded with thousands of advertisements every day, advertisers want theirs to be the boldest, edgiest and loudest
Distinctive
When you study an advertisement, remember it is trying to get your attention and set itself apart from the rest.
Start with the aspects that are the most distinctive.
