Visuals, like words, are a type of language.
Studying visual language is about understanding how symbols and images shape meaning.
Symbols: Images used to represent something or someone.
Images: The design and purpose and of an image or images
Layout: How visuals are ordered and arranged
Size and Shape: Use of shapes, sizes, vectors and text
Symbols
Symbols are a means of universal communication which do not require language to interpret, e.g. Red light = stop, Heart = love
Though these symbols can mean other things as well, through their contexts we can attain meaning.
Images: You need to think about:
What could each image represent?
What effect does each image have?
How are they composed?
Why were these images chosen?
How do images communicate a message?
Layout:
Arrangement: Images are often arranged in order to direct the viewer’s attention
Focal Point: The first or main point of focus is called the ‘focal point’.
Space: The use of space, as well as foregrounds and backgrounds
Size and Shape:
Size: Size indicates perspective, relevance and value of images placed together
Shapes: Shapes, and the way objects are represented, give them meaning
Vectors: Vectors direct a viewer’s gaze around the image; from focal point outwards
Text: Text can also be of visual significance due to its size, shape and positioning
