The Attack of the Brahmastra. The story begins just after the Kurukshetra war. The vengeful Ashwatthama, son of Dronacharya, murders the five sons of Draupadi (the Upapandavas) in their sleep. After Ashwatthama is captured, he is stripped of a divine jewel (Mani) on his head.
Still consumed by a desire to destroy the Kuru lineage, Ashwatthama unleashes the powerful celestial weapon, the Brahmastra, specifically targeting the womb of Uttara (Abhimanyu’s widow), where the only remaining Kuru heir was developing.
Krishna's Divine Rescue
Feeling the devastating heat and power of the weapon, Uttara approaches Lord Krishna, who was preparing to leave for Dwarka, and pleads for the safety of her unborn child.
Lord Krishna, the all-knowing and all-pervading, immediately understands the danger. Using his yogic power, he shrinks his form to the size of a thumb and enters Uttara's womb. Inside, the unborn child witnesses a divine, four-armed figure wielding the Shankha, Chakra, Gada, and Padma. This form of Krishna intercepts the Brahmastra with his Vishnu Chakra, neutralizing the weapon and saving the child.
The Origin of the Name 'Parikshit'
Initially, the child was known as Vishnunada, meaning 'one protected by Vishnu.'
However, the divine vision of the Lord in the womb was deeply imprinted on the child's consciousness. After his birth, he constantly gazed at all the people around him—his family, ministers, and subjects—as if testing or searching (Pariksha in Hindi) for the divine being he saw protecting him in the dark world of the womb.
Because of his relentless action of Pariksha (searching or examining) for the Lord, he became famously known as Parikshit.
Parikshit means "the tested one," stemming from his miraculous survival in the womb from Ashwatthama's Brahmastra, protected by Lord Krishna, whom he then searched for. His story involves ruling justly as King of Hastinapur, earning a curse to die by snakebite in seven days for disrespecting Rishi Shamika, and spending his final week listening to Shukadeva Goswami narrate the Srimad Bhagavatam, attaining liberation. 💖
As an unborn child in his mother Uttara's womb, Parikshit was struck by a divine weapon, Brahmastra, but miraculously saved by Lord Krishna, who appeared in a four-handed form.
Searching for the Savior: After his birth, he constantly looked at everyone to find the divine being who protected him, leading to his name meaning "one who examines" or "the tested one".
He became a righteous king, maintaining peace and justice in his kingdom, and preventing Kali Yuga's influence.
The Curse: While hunting, he disrespected a meditating sage by placing a dead snake around his neck. The sage's son, Shringi, cursed him to die from a snakebite within seven days.
Acceptance: Parikshit accepted his fate calmly, renounced his kingdom, and went to the banks of the Ganges. The Bhagavatam: He spent his last seven days listening to the Srimad Bhagavatam from the sage Shukadeva Goswami, learning about the soul and liberation.
