Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Sheriff T.K. Waters and Chief Alan Parker shared details about an officer-involved-shooting. This happened on East 25th Street at Buckman Street in the Longbranch area.
Around 7 a.m., officers responded to a call involving a man with mental health concerns. Officers learned the suspect had tried to light a home on East 16th Street on fire. Officers also learned he was armed with a knife. The suspect ran from the area. A K9 officer spotted the suspect walking along East 25th Street near Buckman Street. The officer had a description of the suspect and called the suspect by name. The officer wanted the suspect to stop or the office would release the K9. The suspect did not comply and began to run away from the officer while holding his knife. The officer followed after him. The officer got out of his vehicle with his taser. The suspect then threatened the officer, pushing the knife out towards the officer twice. The officer dropped his taser, pulled out his pistol, and shot the suspect.
Additional officers quickly arrived, getting the knife out of the suspect’s hand and rendering emergency medical aid. The suspect did not survive. He has been identified as 30-year-old Brian Gillis.
This is the 13th officer-involved-shooting this year for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The officer involved in the shooting is C. Bumgarner. The officer did not receive any injuries in this incident.
The State Attorney’s Office is on scene, completing its investigation. Once its investigation is complete, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own investigation.
