1. The Moving Landscape
Point Reyes is literally on a different "plate" than the rest of California. The San Andreas Fault runs right through Bear Valley. During the famous 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the land near the Earthquake Trail (right next to the Bear Valley Visitor Center) shifted a staggering 18 feet in less than a minute!

2. A Bird-Watcher's Paradise
Bear Valley is a "hotspot" for biodiversity. About 45% of all North American bird species have been spotted in Point Reyes. While hiking up Wittenberg, listen for the distinct "thumping" sound of the Sooty Grouse or look for Osprey soaring toward the coast.

3. The "Hidden" Beach Connection
If you hike the full loop from Mount Wittenberg down to the Bear Valley Trail, you can take a small detour to Sculptured Beach. It’s famous for its dramatic rock arches and tide pools—but it’s only accessible at low tide!

4. Morgan Horse Ranch
Right at the Bear Valley trailhead, you’ll find a working ranch for Morgan Horses. These horses are used by National Park rangers to patrol the 150 miles of trails where vehicles can't go.
