Muir Woods National Monument is home to one of the last remaining ancient coastal redwood groves — with trees over 1,000 years old and towering more than 250 feet high. In this guide, I’ll show you the must-do hikes here, from the easy main loop to longer, quieter trails that get you away from the crowds.

We’ll start with the Main Loop Trail, a mostly flat, stroller- and wheelchair-friendly route that takes you past Founders Grove, Cathedral Grove, and along Redwood Creek. I’ll show you where to turn for shorter half-mile or one-mile options, and where to continue for the full loop with elevated hillside views. Along the way, you’ll learn about the park’s history, its unique redwood root system, and spots like the FDR Memorial.

If you’re looking for more solitude, the Canopy View Loop offers a peaceful climb into the mid-level redwood canopy before descending Fern Creek, home to some of the park’s largest trees. For an even bigger challenge, the Bootjack Trail Loop combines quiet redwood stretches, historic meadow stops, and sweeping downhill runs along the TCC, Stapelveldt, and Ben Johnson Trails.

I’ll also share a backdoor way into the park if you can’t get a timed parking reservation — hiking in from Mountain Home Inn with ocean views and a quick connection to the Canopy View Trail.
